Housing Locations
Otsuka
•The Otsuka area once flourished as one of the largest entertainment districts in Tokyo. In the early Showa era, it was known to be a center of popular culture, with over 700 geishas working there and a large department store to attract people. There are still a few geishas in the Otsuka geisha district, giving nightly performances of Japanese ballads and shamisen. •Not far from Otsuka station, the Tenso Shinto Shrine sits on a hill, surrounded by 600-year-old ginkgo trees! •From the South Exit of Otsuka station is Minami Otsuka San-chome Street, widely known for cherry blossoms. The annual cherry blossom festival in March attracts many people to enjoy the flowers in full bloom. •The Toden Arakawa Line nearby is one of the only tramways left in Tokyo. Roses are planted on both sides of the tramway, making it a beautiful sight to see all year round. •Entering the large commercial building inside Otsuka Station, you will find a great selection of supermarkets, grocery stores, and restaurants.
Gokokuji
•The Gokokuji area spreads around the Gokokuji Temple, which was first built in 1681. It belongs to the bigger Bunkyo district that is home to many educational institutions such as the Ochanomizu Women’s University and Atomi-gakuen High School. •Within the 83,000 square meter bounds there is rich greenery everywhere; ideal for walking around. The interior has also opened for the public to see. •The Gokokuji Temple was established by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty, as a dedication to his mother Keishoin. It is located right in the central region of Tokyo, which is known for its educational atmosphere and lush greenery. •Just a 3-minute walk from the temple, TOKYOSTAY’s Gokokuji sharehouses are located on a slight hill. From there, it is easy to get to Gokokuji Station on Yurakucho Line, Shin-Ōtsuka Station and Myōgadani station on Marunouchi Line, as well as Otsuka Station on JR Yamanote Line. •In addition, after walking 20 minutes northeast, you’ll reach the east side of Ikebukuro, the leading entertainment district and one of the biggest train stations in Tokyo.
Shiinamachi
•Shiinamachi is where famous Japanese cartoonists such as Osamu Tezuka, Fujio Akatsuka, and Fujiko Fujio grew up. The Tokiwa-sō apartment building they stayed in has been known as a sacred place for manga. Although the building is no longer there, you can still visit the ramen shops where they dined, as well as memorial monuments nearby. At the “Tokiwa-sō rest area”, you can even read some Tokiwa-sō based manga for free. •There are several shopping streets that spread around Shiinamachi station, making it convenient to live in the area. •Other cool spots include the temple-owned terrace cafe “Nayuta” and manga exhibition cases in the station. You can enjoy the warmth of the residential area as well as new things coming in. •The TOKYOSTAY Shiinamachi sharehouses are located only two minutes from Shiinamachi Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, and it takes about 10 minutes to get to Ikebukuro Station. •In addition, Mejiro Station on the JR Yamanote Line, Ochiai-Minami-Nagasaki Station on the Toei Oedo Line, and Kanamechō station on the Yurakucho Line are all within walking distance.
